The code I'm going to install as a patch (resource 'code' 668) does nothing
particular, it's just too see if gets executed.
The program seems to work fine, it gets the proper code resource and installs
its address correctly into the trap dispatch table (Add = *NSEHandle), but when
I call the SysError(0) my function looks like it is never executed.
Is there something wrong in the example? Does anybody ever faced a similar
problem or has some specific example?
Thank you very much in advance,

I couldn't find a d7 on the Bedford ftp site: d5 was it. I wouldn't
recommend using these anyway. Stick with the version on the CD. The next
release V8R5 will have a new VA with many bug fixes --- stay tuned.

Well, my head is down again, and I could use some cheering up.
FIRST: the new Project Manager v8.0.4d11 can NOT handle my v8.0.3 project-file.
I have a moderate size C project (less then 100 sources). When I try to open
it with the new PM it just holds after displaying the project window.
The first time I presented it the PM 8.0.3 project with objects, and PM 8.0.4
asked me if I wanted to convert it (loosing all objects). After my confirmation
it shows the project-window, a clock-cursor and hangs the machine. Restarting
was the only option to continue. (There were no objects removed)
The second time I gave it the project without the objects (removed by PM803),
(yes I want to convert) it shows the project window and clock-cursor and hangs.
This time es in Macsbug releases my Mac.
But it makes the new SPM804 unusable, and I had to revert to 803.
SECOND: after my problem report about the Debugger not being able anymore
to handle my (the same) project a few weeks back, Symantec reported
that the new Debugger from release 4 could solve this problem. NO WAY:
there is no difference: it just hangs there with it's blank data and source
windows. Restarting is really the only way to clean things up.
WHAT IS THIS!?
The new SPM is not usable (while the old 803 is!) Without SPM804 the MrC
compilers are worthless. The new debugger is just as useless as the old one.
So the only benefit I got from release 4 are the v2.1 Universal Headers (for
which I'm glad, but I could have gotten them from another source quicker).
Give me a good reason to stick with Symantec; my patience is getting
really thin. Please don't make promises, but give me tools that work
(remember I paid for them).
If you have positive solutions to the above problems I would love to
hear about them, preferably sooner than later.

I had similar problems. I just moved back to 8.0.3
8.0.4 actually behaved better than 8.0.3, but the VA and PM would have many
"Illegal Instruction" error's.
8.0.3 would just crash (without any error dialogs, it would just hang).
I'm using Speed Doubler and Ram Doubler and the standard 7.5 extension set.

Did you say you just upgraded to Symantec 7??? What?? 8.0 has been out for
a while and you "just upgraded" to Symantec 7?
Do you mean you had Symantec 6.0 and updated it to 7.0 with the free
updaters? Well, thats a different story. If you want VA and TCL 2* then
you need to BUY the newest Symantec C++. And believe me, I think its worth
it. VA has really cut down my interface build time and frustration.

I would like to know the following. When you compile a desk accesory in
Symantec C++, and later "build the desk accesory" you obtain a suitcase
wich contains a file with an application icon. Which file is the desk
accesory?. The suitcase or the file inside the suitcase?. Do I have to
change manually creator and/or the file type manually?.
The problem is that I want to obtain a QuarkXpress Xtension. (Xtlite).

I'm using Symantec 8.0.3
I just upgraded to 24MB ram with the hopes that I could run Symantec 8 w/
debugger. But even THAT isnt enough??
Also, something strange happens when I'm trying to do this. At one point I tried
to run my program with just the debugger and my app, and I was getting not
enough memory errors!
When I wasnt running anything, the system usually takes up 5.5 MB, but when
I looked at the About Box I found out that my system was taking up 7 MB! Also,
when I quit everything it says..
5.8MB taken up by system,
17 mb left
I'm missing 1.5 MB! Where is it going?
Can I use Ramdoubler with the debugger?? I'm really dissappointed that
upgrading to 24MB hasnt given me more ability to debug.

I would think it is just enough, unless your program needs a lot of memory.
Maybe your memory has become fragmented? Maybe you should cut down on
your extensions.
>When I wasnt running anything, the system usually takes up 5.5 MB, but when
>I looked at the About Box I found out that my system was taking up 7 MB!
Programs, including SPM and the debugger, might snatch temporary memory
from the system.
>Also,
>when I quit everything it says..
>
>5.8MB taken up by system,

>
>I'm missing 1.5 MB! Where is it going?
Again, this might be a fragmentation issue: the 17MB is the largest
unused block, isn't it.
>Can I use Ramdoubler with the debugger??
Yes, RamDoubler v1.5.2 and up are ok, provided you're using PowerMac
DebugServices v2.0b14. I'm working with that setup without any problems
(that is, no problems related to RamDoubler).
>I'm really dissappointed that
>upgrading to 24MB hasnt given me more ability to debug.
I can understand your feeling. If you're not using C++ (only C) you might
try giving the SPM a little less memory: I managed to debug my project
with only 20 MB that way (of course with a very lean system < 3MB).
That's why I think 24 MB should be enough.
Good luck.

The first thing I'd do is move up to the pre-release 8.0.4 tools on the
v8r4 CD. Don't be intimidated by their prerelease nature: we used them
internally to build and develop all versions on that CD (including 8.0.3).
>I just upgraded to 24MB ram with the hopes that I could run Symantec 8 w/
>debugger. But even THAT isnt enough??
It is a recognized problem with the Symantec environment that it takes a
fair amount of memory, especially on medium to large sized apps. For the
upcoming r5 release we've done a lot of work to optimize our use of
memory. The next release will be better.
>Also, something strange happens when I'm trying to do this. At one point I
>tried
>to run my program with just the debugger and my app, and I was getting not

Where? When attempting to launch the app in the debugger? When running
your app? When performing a dataview expression?
>When I wasnt running anything, the system usually takes up 5.5 MB, but when

The SPM makes use of temporary memory: it is possible for this to get
fragmented such that the largest unused block is smaller than you expect.
>Can I use Ramdoubler with the debugger?? I'm really dissappointed that
>upgrading to 24MB hasnt given me more ability to debug.
Yes, you can use RAMDoubler (make sure you use 1.6.1) or VM. In each case
the system will be able to file-map the applications saving some space,
though at a performance penalty.

BEWARE: make sure you start working on _copies_ of your SPM803 projects.
Otherwise, when they are converted by SPM804 you cannot revert to SPM803.
And in _my_ experience SPM804 is unusable: it chokes on a project which
is handled by SPM803 perfectly.

I had started out using 8.0.4d, but I was getting numerous system errors
of type 11. (Most often with the prerelease VA on r4). If you say its
pretty stable, then I'll hack away at my system till I find out what
really is the culprit.

Well I certainly hope r5 comes out soon. My app has just started. Its a
VA w/ shared TCL. On another note, I cant seem to browse through the
regular TCL when it is a shared library in my project.

When i'm attempting to launch the app in the bugger.

Yeah, I think its temporary memory, but when you quit all your applications,
you expect it to release all that temp memory. In my case it didnt.

I've been told I need "DebugServices 2.0b14", but where am I supposed
to put it, and how do I launch it?
One last thing. I've had trouble with the newest Think Reference Viewer.
I copied the whole folder onto my HD but when I try to activate a link
it says "Cant go to that page." It does this for nearly all links,
rendering TR viewer useless. I've had to move back the the original
Think Reference App (2.0*)

In fact I've found that SC++ runs of of memory less at under 8 megs of
ram,
so I went ahead and changed the Size resource on 8.0.4d11 so that it
I could set it at 7804K.

This is what I was getting as well. The other trick I have found is to
make sure no other apps are running, and then launch PowerMac Debug
Services _prior_ to launching SC++. These seems to help memory
fragmentation.
Sooner or later SC++ will run out of memory. Just quit it and restart
it again. This is where launching Debug Services first pays off.

In my experience, the SC++, the Sym debugger and VM haven't gotten along
very well. I'd be interested in hearing from powerMac users who have had
success with 24MB and this configuration.
BTW, Think C++ works great with SpeedDoubler and it makes the speed
acceptable. It seems like it is more stable with Modern Memory Manager
off.
To make Think C++ work with large percompiled headers, do thge opposite,
turn the partition up to 10MB or so.

I know you are frustrated right now, so bear with me as I tell you that you
can make it work...
I use a PowerMac 700 (Apple upgrade card) with 20Mb and a PowerMac 7500 with
24Mb without a problem. Like you, I cannot run on either without virtual
memory. On the 20Mb machine, I cannot even run the Symantec Project manager
for more than an hour or so without crashing. With VM on, I can use it, the
debugger, etc. for days without ever exiting the application.
On the RAM Doubler note, it is a piece of junk. Period, end of story. It
slows the computer down by nearly 50%, and crashes half of my apps. Just
look on a support forum sometime. Noone there has anything nice to say about
it, and more to the point look at how many patches that have surfaced from
Conectix in the last 2 months! None have worked for me, so I stopped using
it altogether. If it didn't come with MSOffice, I would have sent it back.
On a PowerMac, though, you need something that manages memory and does file
mapping, so use VM. The hit with 24Mb of RAM is about 30% on application
start up, and less than 2% while it is running. Well worth the brain-damage.
It also manages fragmentation which you do not get with VM off. You must
reboot your computer to defrag memory without it, so turn it on, keep it on.
The 1.5Mb is heap storage requested from the OS by Symantec. Read IM
sometime to learn more.
If you still have problems, start chucking extensions...
Good luck,
-Russ

My guess is that the DebugServices background process is still running and
is locked in RAM. If you kill that process, then your available RAM will go
back to what it was.

1. 19-Part email- can be read by EVERYONE (~525 K Total).
2. For more advanced computer users: attached text file ~525K - you
must know how to download an attached text file and then be able to
open it with your word processor. If in doubt, don't ask for this
version. This isn't for internet *newbies.* Better to order option 1
and spend a few minutes pasting them into one whole text document
with your word processor, than to waste hours trying to figure how
to deal with this option.
3. For more advanced Macintosh computer users: compressed attached
text file, created with a Stuffit(tm) self-extracting archive (.sea),
~133K. Can be decompressed by any Macintosh computer user; no
special expansion software or knowledge of Stuffit (tm) needed. You
just double-click on the file icon and it automatically expands
(unstuffs). This is for more advanced mac computer users only, as
you still have to know how to deal with an attached file. It will cut
your download time by 75%. Expands out to the same ~525K file in
option #2. See option #2 for more info on what you will need to be
able to do.
4. For expert computer users: compressed attached text file, created with
Stuffit(tm), ~114K. Can be decompressed by any computer user who
has expansion software to decompress (expand) Stuffit(tm) (.sit) files.
This is for more advanced computer users only and will cut your

Hi fellow 'netters,
My name is Melanie Tsai and I recently started using a magazine
subscription club in the USA that has a FREE 1 yr. magazine subscription
deal with your first paid order- and I have been very pleased with them.
They have over 1,500 different USA titles that they can ship to any country
on a subscription basis. As for computer magazines from the USA, they
more of a selection than I ever knew even existed. They have magazines for
most every area of interest in their list of 1,500 titles.
Within the USA, for their USA members, they are cheaper than all their
competitors and even the publishers themselves. This is their price
guarantee.
Overseas, on the average, they are generally around one-fourth to one-half
of what the newsstands overseas charge locally for USA magazines. On some
titles they are as little as one-tenth of what the newsstands charge. They
feel that mgazines should not be a luxury overseas. In the USA, people
buy magazines and then toss them after reading them for just a few minutes
or hours. They are so cheap in the USA! Well, this company would like to
make it the same way for their overseas members. They are also cheaper
than all their competitors in the USA and overseas, including the
publishers themselves! This is their price guarantee. Around one-half
their business comes from overseas, so they are very patient with new
members who only speak limited English as a 2nd language.
Their prices are so cheap because they deal direct with each publisher and
cut-out all the middlemen.
They will send you their DELUXE EMAIL CATALOGUE (around 525K-big and
juicey) !)...if you completely fill out the form above. It has lists of
all the freebies, lists of all the titles they sell, titles broken down by
categories and detailed descriptions on nearly 1,200 of the titles that
they sell.
Please do not email me as I am just a happy customer and a *busy* student.
I don't have time to even complete my thesis in time, let alone run my
part-time software business! Please fill out the above form and carefully
follow the intructions above to get it to them via fax or smail.
They guarantee to beat all their competitors' prices. Sometimes they are
less than half of the next best deal I have been able to find and other
times, just a little cheaper - but I have never found a lower rate yet.
They assured me that if I ever do, they will beat it.
They have been very helpful and helped me with all my address changes as I
haved moved from one country to another.
They have a deal where you can get a free 1 yr. sub to a new magazine from
a special list of over 295 popular titles published in the USA. They will
give you this free 1 yr. sub when you place your first paid order with them
to a renewal or new subscription to any of the over 1,500 different popular
USA titles they sell.
They can arrange delivery to virtually any country and I think they have
clients in around 45 or 46 countries now. Outside the USA there is a
charge for FPH (foreign postage and handling) (on both paid and freebie
subs) that varies from magazine to magazine. I have found their staff to
be very friendly and courteous. They even helped me with an address change
when I moved from one country to another.
The owner thinks of his service as a "club" and his clients as "members"
(even though there is no extra fee to become a member - your first purchase
automatically makes you a member) and he is real picky about who he accepts
as a new member. When he sets you up as a new member, he himself calls
you personally on the phone to explain how he works his deal, or sometimes
he has one of his assistants call. He is kind of quirky sometimes - he
insists on setting up new members by phone so he can say hi to everyone (I
sure wouldn't want to have his phone bills!), but you can place future
orders (after your first order) via E-mail.
He has some really friendly young ladies working for him, who seem to know
just as much as he does about this magazine stuff. If you live overseas,
he will even call you there, as long as you are interested, but I think he
still makes all his overseas calls on the weekends, I guess cause the long
distance rates are cheaper then.
He only likes to take new members from referrals from satisfied existing
members and he does virtually no advertising. When I got set-up, they had
a 2-3 week waiting list for new members to be called back so that they
could join up. (Once you are an existing member, they help you immediately
when you call. ) I think they are able to get back to prospective new
members the same day or within a few days now, as they have increased
their staff. I am not sure about this.........but if you email the above
form to them, that is the way to get started!
They will send you their DELUXE EMAIL CATALOGUE (around 525K-big and
juicey) !)...if you completely fill out the form above. It has lists of
all the freebies, lists of all the titles they sell, titles broken down by
categories and detailed descriptions on nearly 1,200 of the titles that
they sell.
They then send you email that outlines how his club works and the list of
free choices that you can choose from, as well as the entire list of what
he sells; and then they will give you a quick (3-5 minute) friendly,
no-pressure no-obligation call to explain everything to you personally and
answer all your questions.
Once you get in, you'll love them. I do.
Sincerely,
Melanie Tsai
ps. please forward a copy of this message to all your friends on the net
who you think might be interested in it! It is a great deal! If you join
and then they join after you, you will earn a free 1 yr. subscription for
each new person you get to join after you join! If you exceed 25
referrals, they let you use them to give away as gifts, for Christmas,
Chanukah or any other occasion. Please be kind enough to mention my name
when you join. I will then get a free magazine for a year for referring
you.
Thank you.

Before the question gets asked, you can kill DebugServices by executing
the applescript:
tell application "Power Mac DebugServices"
quit
end tell
The current DebugServices also has a hidden keyboard shortcut to tell it
to quit; hold down shift, control, and delete until a dialog appears.
This isn't an offical feature and may go away in the future, though.
The next release of the Symantec Debugger automatically quits
DebugServices when the debugger quits (if DS was launched by the
debugger). Connecting to DebugServices is also much faster, so the
Debugger startup is much less annoying.

I want to know if there is a way to make a delay in a program. I tryed
making a loop with a number increassing, (1 to 5000) but doesnt work. I
think it has to exist a way to make a delay of 2 seconds for example.
Thanks.

How about this...
Get the system time from the sytem clock and store the value.
Loop until the sytem time is 2 seconds(for example) greater than the stored
system time value.

There's a toolbox procedure called delay, which will allow you
to delay an arbitrary number of ticks (60ths of a second). You
can use your method, but modern computers are so fast that a loop
of 5000 iterations is done in a flash. Also, your method would
be dependent on the speed of the CPU and would have to be adjusted
to different models. The delay procedure is independent of the
CPU speed and gives you one less thing to worry about.

Check out Inside Mac II page 384 for the "Delay (duration, &finalTick);"
call.
Depending on your needs Delay() may do the trick. Otherwise you
may want to keep calling GetNextEvent()/WaitNextEvent().

Has anyone had success with using HP's Standard Template Libraries with
Symantec 7.1.1? The HP STL of interest is the 7 July '95 release that
comes with Mark Nelson's book. When I try and load the STL header files the
Think Project Mamager application quits with a "Illegal Combination of
Types" and "... type 1" error message. Hence, I'm unable to begin tracking
down the problem.
Is there a recommended STL library to use with Symantec C++?
Thanks in advance,

Subject: Think-c source for NCSA Telnet 2.5?
Hi there,
I wonder if you can help me. I's like to edit the source code for NCSA's
Telnet2.5 to make use of the X windows style cursor position reporting
feature available in Telnet2.6. I prefer 2.5 to 2.6 at the moment but
would like to be able to include this functionality into the former.
I have the source code for 2.5 and a copy of the Think-C compiler package for
the Mac but am having problems compiling the code. What has it been written in
and is the source code available that is complient with Think-C?
I'd appreciate it if postings are additionally mailed to coop@icrf.icnet.uk as
I am not a regular reader of this group (yet).

To: THINK C and Symantec C++ Mailing List <think-c@rdatasys.com>
is anyone having trouble using Symantec Debugger 1.04d2?
I am compiling with SPM MrC++ 8.1.0B4, 1995. I'm including <MrC
TCLHeaders> and am linking to THINKClassLib. I am doing so on an 8100/80 AV
with 48 Mb RAM, Modern MM on and no VM. I have no optimization, always
stack frames, functions for in-lines and symbolic debugging enabled. I
launch Powermac debugging services in my startup items as someone on
mactdg-talk suggested that it be running **before** the debugger was
launched.
I have a couple of severe problems.
1) I cannot access any data! Any data item I select and then "Copy To
Data" appears in the data pane with a value of either "** *** compile
failed *** **", or garbage (something like "** &=C1 **").
2) I don't know how to step into a #pragma defined template function.
All I ever get in the code pane is the #pragma line. How can I debug it if
I can't step into it?
3) I hate the fact that your running application is always hidden. I'd
like to be able to see what my application is doing, just like hitting
<ESC> in MacsBug. BTW Should I be using any version of MacsBug other than
6.5.2. I keep getting "Macsbug caused the exception" to which I can only
<CMD> G.
Does anyone know how R5 coming along? I am only using SPM MrC++
because Symantec C++ (68k, 8.0.3) wouldn't compile my code: bug report
#10460 (incidentally, neither would SPM C++; same problem). I'd really like
to be able to return to TPM. I much prefer the debugging environment,
especially the inspector. Is there an equivalent to the inspector for SPM?
I'm trying to port code that compiled under Microsoft Visual C++
1.52 without complaint. That doesn't carry much weight, but not being able
to compile and debug this code makes the Mac department look really bad
compared to the PC department.

I thought I'd let you know of a problem that I found in
Symantec C++ 8.0.4.
The problem is with non-typedef'd enum or structs. i.e. compiling
the following
class CEnumTest
{
public:
enum Type { ONE = 1, TWO = 2 };
CEnumTest() : m_Type(ONE) {};
void SetType (enum Type Type = ONE) { m_Type = Type; };
private:
enum Type m_Type;
};
main()
{
int test_chosen = -1;
CEnumTest *pMyCEnumTest = new CEnumTest;
pMyCEnumTest->SetType ();
// lots of code
};
will produce an internal error from symbol.c apparently at the last
line of the function that calls SetType(), which in this case is main().
I came across this problem when compiling code that had originally
been compiled under Microsoft Visual C++ 4.0 which, in my opinion against
the wishes of the ARM, compiles this without complaint. BTW so does Borland
C++ 4.0.
It would however, been nice if the symantec C++ had simply warned
me that I was using an implicitly typedef'd enum-name as a variable-name.
Since the error produced claims to have occured in a place other
than whence it did, it was a little sod to track down.
yours.

1. 19-Part email- can be read by EVERYONE (~525 K Total).
This is for more advanced computer users only and will cut your
download time by 78%. Expands out to the same ~525K file in option
#2. See option #2 for more info on what you will need to be able to do.
Hi fellow 'netters,
My name is Allison Eng and I recently started using a magazine subscription
club in the USA that has a FREE 1 yr. magazine subscription deal with your
first paid order- and I have been very pleased with them. They have over
1,500 different USA titles that they can ship to any country on a
subscription basis. As for computer magazines from the USA, they more of
a selection than I ever knew even existed. They have magazines for most
every area of interest in their list of 1,500 titles.
I do.
Sincerely,
Allison Eng
ps. please forward a copy of this message to all your friends on the net
who you think might be interested in it!
I will then get a free magazine for a year for referring
you.
Thank you.

I don't know how to stop them from comming but we can make the life
a bit harder for those doing this by forwarding the same AD that you
just recived to the sender, use forward mail and change the Subject
to something interesting.
If all in this list would do the same for each AD that arrives,
these pesky persons that sends this kind of stuff should at least
have some problem to find out what mail is important for him to read
since his mailbox is full of forwarded mail.

No, no, no. Not only is this childish, but it punishes those who have done
no wrong. There is no guarantee that the return address is the poster's;
it may belong to someone else entirely. This strategy can also lead to
bogging down the system of the poster, which includes many folks who have
done no wrong.
A better strategy might be to send a message to postmaster@address, and
hope that someone is there who can take steps to remedy the problem.

Do you practice what you suggest? I do. Plus I "cc:" the sender's

does anyone have any hints for dealing with system errors that
occur **before** my main is called?
Presumably the error is either in one of the startup libraries,
CPlusLib TCL etc., or in the construction of any global data. I'm fairly
sure that I don't have any global data that requires construction, and thus
the calling of any of my code (he said swifly trying to pass the buck ;-}).
MacsBus says the following, when I try to run my application
System error #15 at 01F10E7C 'CODE 0001 1D04'+000CC
I will collate presonal replies and post to the list useful hints.
TIA
